Queenstown Gardens, the most honest place in town
It is the only place around here worth recommending with no catch: free, flat, inside town, no booking, no car and no weather window. And it scores higher than the gondola.
What it is
A park on the peninsula that closes the bay, five minutes' walk from the centre. The full loop is about two kilometres, forty unhurried minutes, lake on one side and trees on the other. Inside there is disc golf, an ice rink and a skatepark.
The disc golf and its small print
Playing is free, but the disc is collected from reception at the Queenstown Ice Arena and they ask for photo ID as a deposit, so you can only hire one while the rink is open. That is the rule that matters; the prices doing the rounds are not something we could confirm at source, so we do not quote them.
Spring is its moment
Between mid September and mid October the daffodils, tulips and cherry blossom come out. It is not only here: Lake Esplanade fills with cherry trees by the water and the Village Green has its own. It is a short window and it moves with the year, so in early September it may not have started.
One honest argument against
Someone who lives here says doing the full loop on your first day spends time that Queenstown Hill needs more, since that one actually climbs and has the view. They have a point if you only have three days: then this is a sunset stroll, not a morning plan.
