Doubtful Sound, the other fiord and what it really costs

It is bigger than Milford, it has far fewer people, and the way in is half the experience. It is also more expensive and takes the whole day, with no exceptions. If that fits, it is the best of Fiordland.

  1. You cannot drive in

No public road reaches the fiord, and that is not an inconvenience: it is the reason it is empty. You cross Lake Manapouri by boat, go over the Wilmot Pass by coach, and another boat is waiting. That chain is exactly why Doubtful sees a fraction of Milford's visitors.

  2. The journey is part of the product

The Lake Manapouri crossing and the climb over the Wilmot Pass are among the most beautiful parts of the trip, and anyone counting the transit hours has missed the point. At Milford the road is a toll you pay; here it is what you came to see, and it arrives before the fiord does.

  3. Against Milford: dearer and longer

It costs more than Milford and it takes the whole day: there is no short version. From Queenstown it is about four hours to the departure point, and only on an organised tour. The advice that repeats most on the Fiordland forums is not to choose at all: Milford by day and Doubtful overnight, which is when the fiord becomes yours.

  4. The sandflies, and this is not a joke

They go for you above all while you wait for the boat on the way back, which is exactly when you are standing still and tired. Repellent in your pocket, not in your bag.

  5. When it runs

The overnight cruise runs October to April, and in 2026 sailings started as early as 1 September. The prices circulating on aggregator sites are not something we could confirm on the operator's own pages, so we do not quote a figure: check there before booking. What is true is that outside summer it costs considerably less.
